Janshala meaning 'community school' had the main objective to initiate community involvement in all aspects of primary education, such as its expansion, management, and monitoring. The programme was initiated in eight states of India earlier namely, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. These nine states under the programme were very different from one another in terms of the issues and concerns related to primary education.
