The Chennakesava Temple was built in Belur, by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. It was originally called Vijayanarayana Temple. Built a temple for Vijaynarayana in 1117 A.D. in commemoration of his victory against the Chola viceroy of Talkad. An inscription on the pedestal of Vijayanarayana image states that the image was caused to be made by King Vishnu. This image shows the courtyard of Chennakeshava Temple.
